Economy has worst slide since `82 -- and tailspin is accelerating as Americans ax spending

Battered by layoffs, debts and dread of worse to come, shoppers clutched ever tighter to their wallets in the final three months of 2008 and thrust the economy into its worst downhill slide in a quarter-century.
